A new computer is exciting until you realize everything you need is still on the old one. This checklist helps you move over without losing anything.
On the old computer, before you start
- Back everything up. Photos, documents, and anything on the desktop or in Downloads.
- List the programs you use, and find license keys or sign-ins for paid ones such as Office or tax software.
- Check your passwords and bookmarks. If they are saved in your browser, sign in to the browser account so they sync. A password manager makes this easy.
- Find where your photos really live. Some are in the cloud, some only on the computer.
Setting up the new one
- Run all the updates first.
- Sign in with your usual account.
- Remove trial software and apps you do not want.
- Check your security settings.
- Set up backup on the new computer right away.
- Add your printer and other devices.
Moving your files
- Cloud storage such as OneDrive, iCloud or Google Drive is easy if your files are already there.
- An external drive works for anything that is not.
- Built-in transfer tools such as Migration Assistant on a Mac, or restoring from Windows Backup on a PC, can move settings and files together.
Programs usually need to be reinstalled on the new computer. Copying them over rarely works.
Do not throw out the old one yet
Keep it for a week or two until you are sure nothing is missing. Then sign out of your accounts and wipe it properly before you sell, donate or recycle it.
We can do the whole move at your home, set up backups on the new computer and wipe the old one safely. See our data backup and recovery service.
