Cameras will not stop every problem at your home, but for many families they are one of the most useful pieces of tech you can add. Here is an honest look.
What cameras are good at
- Seeing what is going on. Check your front door, driveway or backyard from your phone, wherever you are.
- Package deliveries. Know when something arrives, and have a record if it goes missing.
- Peace of mind. Keep an eye on pets, or check in on a family member who lives alone.
- Having a record. If something does happen, clear footage is far more useful than a description.
- Visible deterrence. A visible camera can make someone think twice.
What they cannot do
A camera records and alerts you. It does not lock your doors or stop someone on its own. Think of it as one layer, alongside good lighting and locks.
Things to think about before you buy
- Running costs. Some cameras keep footage in the cloud for a monthly fee, while others record to a card or drive.
- Privacy. Point cameras at your own property, not at neighbors' windows, and be careful with audio recording.
- Account security. A camera is only as safe as the account behind it. Use a strong, unique password and two-step sign-in.
- WiFi coverage. A camera at the edge of your signal will drop offline when you need it most.
Why setup matters as much as the camera
Most disappointing camera experiences come from setup, not the camera itself. A camera mounted too high sees only the tops of heads. One at the edge of your WiFi keeps going offline. Alerts that go off for every passing car get switched off. Getting the position, signal, alerts and account right is what makes a camera actually useful.
That is what we do. We help you choose where cameras should go, install them, connect them to your phone and show you how to use them. Learn more about our camera installation service.
